Advantages:
Cheaper and more memory. Run faster : a 114 Mhz Chip-RAM is possible. Consume less FPGA I/Os (especialy the DDR-SDRAM)
Disadvantages:
Complicated! Uses pipeline. PCB traces must have the same length and a 50 ohm impedance.
