If you want information *about* a particular part, the best place is the datasheet -- usually on the manufacturer's web site.

If you want the actual part itself, though -- sometimes you can get samples directly from the manufacturer. But that's pretty hit-or-miss.
Your best bet is through some [[distributor]] or [[supplier]].

Aloha from Honolulu,
I have several areas of interest. I've been servicing recording studios here in honolulu, since the late '80s. Also concert sound, video projection, and theatrical lighting systems. I play electric rock-blues guitar and know what guitar players want from their Marshall amps. And I do recording engineering and production, so I know what recording engineers need from their monitor amps and speakers.

I have several projects I'm currently working on. And several ideas I want to develop ito new projects. I was thinking about some of those when I came across this site. It seems so serendipitous, I just had to join and write something.

I've spent the last week or so working on PC board layouts of several voltage regulator designs I've built and used over the years. I built a replacement for a recording console power supply regulator, that has been working now for near 10 years. I couldn't find the high current regulators that the original design used, so I used a pair of 723 ICs and external pass transistors and made my own substitute. The 723 has been bery bery goot to me! I used another pair of them to make a bench supply that adjusts from 12V to 35V plus and minus are individually adjustable and the pass devices have a 20A rating. I use this to experiment with various discrete op amp designs. A modern version of the Jensen 990 is my goal.

I've also recently built my first switchmode regulator based on TIs TL494 PWM controller IC. My experience with switching regulators is limited. I never had to repair one, only replace the complete unit, so I'm having to learn about them on my own. I've collected a lot of documentation and learned about buck, boost, buck-boost, fly-back etc. But it is all "book learning" as opposed to "hands on" at this point.

I thought these regulators might interest someone. I will post the schematics and artwork here eventually, but I need to find out more about how that is done. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Aloha, RAF

== welcome ==

Aloha, RogerAF.
Welcome to Open Circuits.

I hope you enjoy reading OpenCircuits and sharing your knowledge with us.

A few tips:
* You can "sign" your contributions by typing four tildes "<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>" at the end.
* Be bold with your editing. If you add information that really belongs on some other page of this wiki (or on some other wiki entirely), or you accidentally delete some crucial stuff, it's fairly easy for anyone to fix it. Please feel free to revert or otherwise fix-up any of my edits that turn out to be erroneous and/or misguided.
* We are all volunteers here.

Thank you for sharing your experiences here.
I also have a bunch of "book learning" about switching regulators.

Have you seen [http://switcher.national.com/ National's "simple switcher"]?
The web application is nice for taking specifications like "up to 3 A output current", input voltage, and output voltage, and rapidly converting it to a circuit that National guarantees will work -- rather than fiddling around with prototypes for a few days.

Have you seen [http://romanblack.com/smps/a04.htm The 3-transistor Black regulator]?
Or the [http://romanblack.com/smps/conv.htm +5v to +13v Converter] also by Roman Black?
It makes me wonder why I used to think switchmode regulators required a complicated IC to control them.

Should we start a page on switching regulators here at Open Circuits?

Hi David,
In response to your question re a switching regulators page. I'd vote yea and expect that a linear page should be its partner. Given that the two types are so different in approach and conception. Linear regulators are very easy for me to understand, because of my years with audio equipment--most of which used linear supplies. Switching supplies are found in audio processing units, but the repair was generally to swap in a new card rather than trouble shoot for bad components.

I haven't done anything with switching regulators other than building my first with a TI TL494 PWM controller IC. I looked at Roman Black's designs (Thanks for that turn on) what elegant simplicity! I'm in awe. I am happy to contribute to a linear regulators page--I have several discrete opamp based designs for dual tracking supplies etc. I'd like to see more switching designs, to expand my own knowledge and raise my conciousness. I've peeked at National's online design software, but never took the time to try anything.

I have a little project that requires +3V, +5V, and +&- 15V. I'm trying out TI's 2W DC/DC converters: DCP020515, DCP020503, and TPS5430 Step Down Converter for that application, but it's on a back burner for a while. If anyone has any experience with these I'd like to hear about it.

I've just been going through the documents I've downloaded and the samples I have on hand from Texas Instruments. The more I think about it, the more a page for switching regulators makes sense. I think it should be broken into different manufacturers offerings with a cross reference at the beginning or the end--assuming there is crossing. There may be more differences than duplications--I don't know, so that is something to be researched. This should be presented to the whole community for feedback.
the best editor I've found is "inkscape".
Download it for free ( http://inkscape.org/ ).
Some people use inkscape even for sketching schematics.

Thank you for starting Open Circuits.
I think one of the niftiest things about wiki (in general) is that even when the original person who started a project suddenly disappears -- changing jobs, moving to a different city, touring a distant country, adopting a child, joining a monastery, etc -- that it allows other people to immediately pick up the project, rather than starting from scratch.

So often people say "Wouldn't it be cool to build a ____?", but it never gets built.
Perhaps they even take a few steps,
but then it seems overwhelming.
Wiki allows everyone to share shortcuts, tips, and pitfalls to avoid,
and to improve the plans so they clearly describe exactly how simple it really is.
<b>Description:</b><br> Samtec is a large connector company that is reasonably easy to deal with but their website is pretty convoluted. You can try using their build-a-part wizard, but we recommend you get a paper catalog and thumb through. All their literature is beautiful, too bad their website is so difficult to use.

We buy all sorts of sockets and connectors from them.

On an interesting note, they have no stock. They build everything to order! We ordered some parts with an incorrect/old part #. Upon receiving 100 bad connectors, we attempted to return them. The customer service rep just stuttered on the phone - they don't do returns! Since they build everything to order, they would have no place to even put returned parts. We were SOL.
(There is currently no text in this page)

(I know, because I just checked.)

(This place used to be lousy with text.)

(Now, it is horrible with it.)

Lou is a freaky dude who is trying to figure out where it's all at, man. Lou has just started referring to himself in the third person to see if it is really as annoying as it is purported to be. It is, but I haven't told him that yet. I will tell him right after the end of this list.

Lou is an old dude; going through his midlife crisis. Yes, that is supposed to come later. His came early. Bite him. Lou is nutty as a nut and sane as a square. Squirrels are strangely attracted to him. Squares, not so much.

Lou has been doin' the circuits-n-stuff thing forever. Always took stuff apart. Often got it back together.

Exploring their metallic and plasticy viscera.

Oh, come on, like you aren't weird too.

If you're a hot chick who's into electronics and/or computers, message Lou. Computer games do not count; though they won't count against you too heavily if you can use vi. Lou (not Paris Hilton) will be the arbiter of who's hot. You may be surprised.

Lou apologizes for the use of the word "chick" on this page. He was unable to select a better one at the time. To this day, he struggles with that choice.

Lou realizes that it is quite possible that no human female will ever read this page, which is really too bad as he fancies them quite a bit, really. Or maybe that is a really good thing. Yeah, probably.

Lou does not want a fight. He will cool it, whatever it is. He is a big wuss that way.

When lou dies, he wants it to be on purpose. Either his or somebody else's. Which makes sense, because the other options are accident, disease, and old age, and all of those are pretty lame ways to die. At least with purpose, something has been accomplished for somebody somewhere. Otherwise, it has all been for naught.

Lou's internal id number is 4. He keeps hitting the snooze on his biological clock. He could not care less whether or not he posted before anybody else, and sincerely wishes that anybody who does care about such things would just die and leave the rest of us alone already.

Lou likes the AVR platform, though he has not yet actually built anything with it. The closest that comes to that is when he tweaked a Motorola WR850G enough to connect it to his AVR Butterfly and change the textual message on the screen when certain IO lines were toggled. He has just sent in an order to have some boards fabbed. One of them will host an ATmega8. Before AVR, Lou liked PIC for its simplicity, but that became its downfall. Why do they not make micros with lots of RAM built in? Particularly those which can boot over a network. A megabyte in a micro would be like the embedded programming version of sex. So lately, he has been looking at the embedded ARM offerings. They don't have that much memory onboard yet, but just wait until they catch on. Oh to dream of the day when Lou can power on his lump at the end of a USB cable and have it fetch a firmware image to become whatever device. That technology exists now.

Lou is the proud owner of a SAM7-H64 from Olimex, which he bought from Spark Fun. It is so very cute. It comes in its very own 4-color printed cardboard box. Maybe, one day, he will have some bootable code for it.

Lou wants me to make extra sure you know that he really digs the ladies a lot and remind you of the whole preceeding section on that. I have no idea why.

Lou is going to totally kill me when he sees this.

This is just un-called-for.

Lou does not know when enough is enough.

He really has no clue.

You can spell it out right in front of him using his own account, and he remains oblivious.

Lou is a god, baby, and doesn't care if you believe it.

He is not holding me at gunpoint right now.

No, I'm not just saying that to avoid having my head blown off.

Really.

Yeah.

Hey - things I'd like to see:

Number of items in a specific category next to the category. For instance:

(13) Passives - Picture<br>
Capacitors, Resistors, etc

The navigation bar on the left side has many problems:<br>
Get rid of donations, random page, recent changes, current event, and potentially community portal. Help is good, but should be called 'What is this place?'.<br>
We really need a nav tree for everything. I want to 'shop' around instead of just click forward and backward.

: Don't get rid of [[Special:RecentChanges|Recent Changes]], IMHO, it's important for people to be able to figure out what's going on on a wiki. --[[User:Wiml|Wiml]] 21:02, 5 February 2006 (PST)

Yea - you're right. But I'd still like to see some sort of navigation tree.

''Yes, navigation is good. Certainly we need to get rid of the sidebar links that go to a "page" that doesn't yet exist. But some people say "tree" is overrated. http://communitywiki.org/HierarchyConsideredHarmful , http://communitywiki.org/AlternativesToHierarchy . --[[User:DavidCary|DavidCary]] 07:34, 11 May 2007 (PDT)''

----

Moments ago I made the article [[SparkFun]] redirect to your user page.
Want to slap a "sparkfun electronics" logo on your user page?
That would make it parallel to the [[Mouser]] and [[Samtec]] and the others listed as [[supplier]] or [[manufacturers]].

Or would you prefer to have a [[SparkFun]] page dedicated to the company, completely independent from the [[User:Sparkfun]] page dedicated to you as a person?
